General Interpreting Terms
Interpreter
A professional who orally conveys spoken communication from one language into another.
Interpretation
The process of transferring spoken or signed communication from one language into another.
Source Language
The language from which the interpreter is interpreting.
Target Language
The language into which the interpreter is interpreting.
Consecutive Interpreting
The interpreter listens to a segment of speech and then interprets it after the speaker pauses.
Simultaneous Interpreting
The interpreter conveys the message while the speaker continues speaking, with only a short delay between the original and interpreted speech.
Relay Interpreting
An interpreter interprets through an intermediate language when a direct language combination is unavailable.
Community Interpreting
Interpreting provided in public or community settings such as government offices, schools, social services, and community organizations.
Escort Interpreting
Interpreting in which the interpreter accompanies a client or individual during appointments, meetings, visits, or other activities to facilitate communication between people who speak different languages.
Términos Generales de Interpretación
Intérprete
Profesional que transmite oralmente la comunicación hablada de un idioma a otro.
Interpretación

Idioma de Origen
El idioma desde el cual interpreta el intérprete.
Idioma de Destino
El idioma al cual interpreta el intérprete.
Interpretación Consecutiva
El intérprete escucha un segmento del discurso y lo interpreta cuando el hablante hace una pausa.
Interpretación Simultánea
El intérprete transmite el mensaje mientras el hablante continúa hablando, con un breve retraso entre el discurso original y la interpretación.
Interpretación por Relevo
Un intérprete trabaja a través de un idioma intermedio cuando no existe una combinación lingüística directa disponible.
Interpretación Comunitaria
Interpretación en oficinas gubernamentales, escuelas, servicios sociales, organizaciones comunitarias y otros espacios públicos o comunitarios.
Interpretación de Acompañamiento
Interpretación en la que el intérprete acompaña a un cliente o persona durante citas, reuniones, visitas u otras actividades para facilitar la comunicación entre personas que hablan diferentes idiomas.
Legal Interpreting
Certified Court Interpreter
An interpreter who has met the applicable certification requirements established for court interpreting.
Legal Interpreting
Interpreting performed in legal or judicial settings, including court proceedings, depositions, hearings, and related matters.
Deposition
A formal proceeding in which a person gives sworn testimony outside of the courtroom, typically recorded for use in a legal case.
Depo Prep / Deposition Preparation
A meeting held before a deposition to prepare a client or witness for the deposition process, expected questions, and testimony.
Direct Examination
Questioning of a witness by the attorney who called that witness.
Cross-Examination
Questioning of a witness by an opposing attorney.
Attorney-Client Privilege
A legal protection generally covering confidential communications between an attorney and client made for the purpose of obtaining or providing legal advice.

Intérprete Judicial Certificado
Intérprete que ha cumplido con los requisitos de certificación aplicables establecidos para la interpretación judicial.
Interpretación Legal
Interpretación para procedimientos legales o judiciales, incluyendo procedimientos judiciales, declaraciones, audiencias y asuntos relacionados.
Deposición (Deposition)
Procedimiento formal en el que una persona presta testimonio bajo juramento fuera de la sala del tribunal, generalmente para ser utilizado en un caso legal.
Interrogatorio Directo
Preguntas realizadas a un testigo por el abogado que presentó a dicho testigo.
Contrainterrogatorio
Preguntas realizadas a un testigo por el abogado de la parte contraria.
Privilegio Abogado-Cliente
Protección legal que generalmente cubre las comunicaciones confidenciales entre un abogado y su cliente realizadas para obtener o proporcionar asesoramiento legal.
Medical Interpreting
Medical Interpreter
A professional who facilitates communication between healthcare providers and patients who speak different languages.
Medical Interpretation
Interpretation provided in healthcare settings such as hospitals, clinics, medical offices, examinations, and appointments.
CMI-Spanish / NBCMI
CMI-Spanish is the Spanish-language Certified Medical Interpreter credential issued by the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI).
QME
Qualified Medical Evaluator. In California, a physician who has been certified to conduct medical evaluations for workers' compensation matters.
IME
Independent Medical Examination. A medical evaluation performed by a physician who is generally not the patient's treating physician.
AME
Agreed Medical Evaluator. In California workers' compensation matters, a physician selected by agreement of the parties to conduct an evaluation.

CMI-Spanish / NBCMI
CMI-Spanish es la credencial de Intérprete Médico Certificado en español otorgada por el National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI).
QME
Qualified Medical Evaluator. En California, médico certificado para realizar evaluaciones médicas relacionadas con asuntos de compensación laboral.
IME
Independent Medical Examination. Evaluación médica realizada por un médico que generalmente no es el médico tratante del paciente.
AME
Agreed Medical Evaluator. En asuntos de compensación laboral de California, médico seleccionado de común acuerdo por las partes para realizar una evaluación.
